A few weeks ago I was on the couch watching movie trailers with Nick and we came across “The Greatest Showman”, which absolutely blew me away. Huge Jackman plays PT Barnum, Zendaya is on the trapeze, amazing music, and it has ALL the old timey circus vibes that my dreams are made of.
I mean just look at that movie trailer — isn’t is everything?! I might have watched it way too many times already.
This immediately re-ignited my love of all things circus related.
As a kid I as was always fascinated with circuses and circus-life. I remember a circus that would come into town that actually had a big-top tent. My Dad took me one year and it was such an amazing show. I loved watching how the Ring Master would present the upcoming acts, all the glitter on their outfits, and the allure of being able to do such daring and magical acts.
Something about it was so alluring and made idea of running away with the circus sound so amazing. I would daydream about going on the road and becoming a tightrope walker — but of course my lack of coordination and balance would never allow that.
Random fact: I did get to do a tightrope walking experience during a college class group training activity. It was of course assisted (your team helped you keep balance) and at that moment I got to live that daydream for a few seconds. :)
So I could never actually run away with the circus I went ahead just read all the circus related things I could find. From the life of PT Barnum, to the history of “freak shows”, to the stories behind circus families.
A few months back I came across 2 great podcast episodes that I usually have on repeat regarding circus life:
- How Circus Families Work via Stuff You Should Know Podcast
- How Freak Shows Worked via Stuff You Should Know Podcast
So have any of you ever dreamt about being part of the circus or was I the truly that odd when I was a kid? :)
